About White Diamonds
Diamonds have been highly coveted by man since they were first discovered over 5,000 years ago, owing to their rarity and beauty.
Almost pure carbon is the stuff which diamonds are made of. Diamonds form when this carbon is exposed to extremely high pressure and temperature conditions—between 1,200 to 1,600°C, and at a pressure of 45,000 to 60,000 kg/cm2. With heat alone, the carbon will turn to graphite rather than diamonds. Pressure is the key ingredient that separates these precious gems from common pencil lead!
This process occurs beneath the earth’s surface, at depths of approximately 150 to 200 kilometers, and takes thousands of years to form. Through volcanic activity, diamonds, once formed, are sometimes brought to the earth’s surface and dispersed by seas and rivers. Today, mining companies scour the earth to find diamonds. They tend to be concentrated in West Africa, Russia and Canada.
Diamond roughs are generally of 3 different shapes:
- Octahedron
- Cube
- Dodkaedron
Diamonds have always been equally desirable and mysterious. Many myths and popular traditions surround them, and the science behind them has not reduced their intrigue today. For everyone, diamonds continue to be a source of beauty and enjoyment.
Clarity Enhancement
One method of enhancing the clarity of a diamond involves filling fractures with substances that match the optical properties of a diamond. Yehuda diamonds are fractured filled diamonds and should be disclosed as such. Fracture filling is not a permanent enhancement treatment (fill material may be affected by exposure to heat) and cannot be accurately clarity graded.
Laser Drilling
Laser Drilling may change a dark inclusion to a less visible inclusion (to the unaided eye). Laser treatment is considered a permanent treatment and is an approved practice in the jewelry industry. Laser Drilling does not affect clarity grading or diamond brilliance.
